1899 – Netflix Series: Dark Creators’ New Mystery
The creative minds behind Netflix's groundbreaking German series Dark have revealed their upcoming venture. On November 14, 2018, in Berlin, Germany, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar disclosed details about their new collaboration with the streaming giant, titled 1899.
This fresh series centers on a steamship carrying migrants westward across the Atlantic, departing London bound for New York as they leave behind the old world. The vessel's passengers represent a diverse tapestry of European backgrounds, bound together by aspirations and ambitions for what the new century holds in the promised land ahead.
However, their voyage takes a sinister twist upon encountering another migrant vessel drifting aimlessly across the ocean. The discoveries made aboard this mysterious ship transform their hopeful journey into a terrifying ordeal that challenges everything they anticipated about their new beginning.
Kelly Luegenbiehl, who serves as Vice President of Originals for Europe & Africa at Netflix, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration: "We are excited to announce this second project with Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. The fact that this concept is so radically different from Dark is a true testament to their creativity and versatility as creators and we are excited to continue this journey with them."
The creative duo shared their inspiration: "What really made us connect to this idea was the concept of having a truly European show with a mixed cast from different countries. At its heart is the question of what unites us and what divides us. And how fear can be a trigger for the latter."
The announcement coincided with the Bambi Awards ceremony in Berlin, where Dark received recognition with a nomination for "best series." This annual celebration honors outstanding achievements in international television and media.
Meanwhile, Dark's sophomore season was underway in production, scheduled for worldwide release in 2019.
Both Friese and Odar are alumni of the University of Television and Film Munich, beginning their partnership with Odar's directorial debut, The Silence. Their filmography includes Who Am I - No System Is Safe, featuring Tom Schilling and Elyas M'barek, which garnered acclaim at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and earned three German Film Awards plus a Bambi for best German film.
Odar, recognized by Variety among "ten directors to watch," ventured into Hollywood with Sleepless, starring Jamie Foxx, released in March 2017. Following their success with Dark, which accumulated multiple Grimme Awards and cultivated a global following, the pair committed to developing exclusive content for Netflix.
